Santos ‘Very Confident’ Neymar Will Sign Extension Through 2026 World Cup
Santos president Marcelo Teixeira says the club is pushing hard to extend Neymar’s contract through the 2026 World Cup, even though the forward has openly admitted he is unsure about his future.
Neymar returned to Santos earlier this year and played a key role in helping the team escape relegation. His season, however, followed a familiar pattern—moments of brilliance mixed with recurring injuries. Despite playing through a new meniscus issue, he delivered a decisive performance in the 3–0 win over Cruzeiro that secured Santos’ survival.
After the match, the 33-year-old surprised fans by revealing he has not made a decision about his future, saying he needs time to rest and reflect. Still, he emphasized that Santos remains his priority.
Santos Confirm Talks Are Ongoing
Teixeira has now clarified the club’s stance:
“Renewing Neymar’s contract is a priority. We’re negotiating to adjust his contract through 2026. There is good intention from Neymar, his management, and Santos.”
He added that the financial agreement must make sense for both sides, but the desire to continue together is strong.
Neymar’s World Cup Ambition
Neymar hopes to be part of Brazil’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, which would be his fourth. His last appearance for the national team came in 2023, and competition for places has intensified with talents like Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo, Estevão, Matheus Cunha, João Pedro, and Raphinha all in form.
Given his age and injury history, staying fit and playing consistently at Santos could be his best chance at making the squad.
What Happens Next?
Neymar will take a short break before deciding his next steps. Santos remain optimistic and believe an agreement can be reached soon. The intention on both sides appears aligned — now it’s a matter of finalizing the details.
