Could Mohamed Salah Really Leave Liverpool After Being Benched Twice By Arne Slot?

Could Mohamed Salah Really Leave Liverpool After Being Benched Twice By Arne Slot?

When Liverpool posted a simple video captioned “The story continues 👑” back in April, fans rejoiced. Mohamed Salah – the Egyptian King, the club icon, the face of Anfield’s modern era – had signed a fresh two-year contract extension.

He said it himself:
“I’ve had my best years here. Hopefully it’s going to be 10.”

Fast-forward just six months… and that dream looks shaky.

Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp even went as far as saying he’d be “amazed if Salah sees out the last year-and-a-half of his contract.” And honestly? It’s becoming less Far-fetched by the week.

From Historic Season To Troubling Decline

Salah didn’t just contribute to Liverpool’s 20th league title last season—
he defined it.

  • 29 goals

  • 18 assists

  • Golden Boot winner

  • Playmaker Award winner

  • Premier League Player of the Season

The first player in history to sweep all three major awards in a single campaign.

A massive part of that success came from a tactical deal between Salah and new coach Arne Slot:

Less defending. More attacking. Leave the dirty work to the system.

And for a while, it worked.

But this season?
The numbers tell a different story.

Salah’s Drop in Productivity Is Hurting Liverpool

After 14 games last season:

  • 13 goals

  • 7 assists

  • Liverpool top of the Premier League.

This season after the same number of matches:

  • 4 goals

  • 2 assists

  • Liverpool sitting 8th.

The right side of Liverpool’s defence, already vulnerable, has become an easy target with Salah doing minimal defensive tracking.

Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella even admitted their plan was to exploit Salah’s high positioning.

The result?
Liverpool are conceding more crosses and being punished repeatedly.

Arne Slot Finally Makes a Big Call

Slot initially protected Salah, insisting his freedom could still yield match-winning moments.

But after weeks of imbalance, tactical exposure, and poor output…
he benched Salah.

Not once.
Twice.

This is the clearest sign yet that Slot no longer sees Salah as untouchable.

Could Liverpool Actually Sell Him?

Absolutely. And here’s why:

Salah has only 18 months left on his contract

If Liverpool don’t extend or sell, he can leave for free.

Saudi clubs are still obsessed with signing him

Al-Ittihad and others would pay massive money.

Liverpool are transitioning under Slot

New manager. New style. New structure.
Liverpool might want a new profile of winger.

Salah won’t accept a bench role long-term

He’s a legend — but even legends move on when the football no longer suits them.

Is This The Beginning Of The End?

Salah signed a new deal hoping to stay two more years.
But football changes fast.

With:

  • Declining numbers

  • Growing tactical issues

  • Questions about work-rate

  • Slot’s willingness to bench him

  • Saudi interest still strong

… the possibility of Salah leaving Liverpool is more real than ever.

If things don’t improve, this may be Salah’s final full season at Anfield — and the era of Liverpool built around the Egyptian King could be coming to a close.
