Former Nigeria international and Brentford hero Sam Sodje has described Benjamin Fredrick’s injury as a major setback—not just for the player, but for the entire Super Eagles setup.
Fredrick, widely regarded as one of the most exciting young defenders in Africa, has seen his fast-rising journey hit a sudden pause after sustaining an injury during training. The timing couldn’t be worse. Coming right after his involvement in Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the injury is expected to keep him out until after the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

“Fredrick will be a massive miss for the national team for the Africa Cup of Nations. It’s going to be a shame he’s not going to make it,” he said.
According to Sodje, Fredrick’s versatility sets him apart. He can play right-back, centre-back, and even step into midfield when needed—making him a modern defensive weapon.
“He’s coming on really well—young, with pace. He’s got every attribute to become a very good player; he’s definitely one for the future,” Sodje added.
With AFCON around the corner and Nigeria relying heavily on youthful energy blended with experience, this absence reshapes defensive options for head coach Eric Chelle.
While the injury rules him out of AFCON 2025, one thing remains certain: Benjamin Fredrick is not just a rising star—he’s a long-term investment for the future of Nigerian football. His maturity, positioning, and ball-carrying ability make him one of the most promising defenders of his generation.
