Seven New Lionesses Out To Catch Sarina Wiegman’s Eye Ahead Of The 2027 Women’s World Cup

England fans tuning in for the final two fixtures of 2025 are in for a surprise—because the team sheet looks very different. With major stars like Leah Williamson, Hannah Hampton, Alex Greenwood and Lauren James unavailable, Sarina Wiegman has been forced to dig deeper into her talent pool.

The result? A squad packed with fresh, hungry footballers aiming to make their mark before World Cup 2027 qualifying begins. With five uncapped players and another five with fewer than 10 senior appearances, this camp could become the birth of England’s next wave of superstars.

While established names like Lucy Bronze, Alessia Russo, Ella Toone and the returning Lauren Hemp continue to provide leadership, all eyes will be on the new hopefuls eager to impress.

Below are a few standout names ready to take their chance…

Sophie Baggaley

For Women’s Super League followers, Sophie Baggaley is no stranger. The Brighton goalkeeper has logged over a decade of top-flight experience across clubs like Birmingham, Bristol City, Manchester United and now Brighton.

She received her first England call-up in 2016 but remains uncapped. Still, Wiegman rates her as a reliable squad option—calling her in for recent windows whenever injury or rotation hits the goalkeeping department.

Baggaley may not be first in line for minutes this week, especially with Khiara Keating and Anna Moorhouse also pushing for time. But she remains a seasoned presence ready to step in if needed. Her consistency could still earn her a pathway into future World Cup plans.

Taylor Hinds

Left-back has long been England’s headache—but Taylor Hinds might finally be the solution.

Having grown through Arsenal’s academy and built her senior career at Everton and Liverpool, Hinds is a versatile full-back and wing-back known for leadership and technical play. She even captained Liverpool multiple times.

After representing Jamaica last year, Hinds made a sensational switch back to England this year at Wiegman’s request. She earned her senior England debut against Australia in October—and hasn’t looked back.

Now back at Arsenal, she’s competing for minutes with Katie McCabe, but her recent uptick in playing time will excite England fans. A strong performance this week could solidify her as England’s long-term left-back option heading toward 2027.

Grace Fisk

With Williamson injured, Millie Bright retired, Greenwood sidelined and Jess Carter resting, England’s usually stacked center-back department suddenly looks thin.

Enter Grace Fisk.

The Liverpool defender earned her first call-up in 2020 and recently returned to the squad for the first time under Wiegman. Despite Liverpool’s struggles in the league, Fisk has stood out as one of their most reliable players.

With fewer center-backs available, she is likely to get valuable minutes this week. And with competition typically fierce in her position, she’ll need to seize this chance if she hopes to push for a World Cup role.

These friendlies against China and Ghana may be the final games of the year—but for these rising Lionesses, they could also be the starting point of a journey to the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

As the European champions continue to evolve, this new generation has everything to play for.
