Mikel Obi’s NFF Ambition Sparks Hot Debate As Nigerian Journalist Issues Strong Warning

Mikel Obi’s NFF Ambition Sparks Hot Debate As Nigerian Journalist Issues Strong Warning

Super Eagles legend John Obi Mikel has set the Nigerian football world buzzing after hinting at his willingness to take on a leadership role in the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF). What began as a patriotic declaration has now snowballed into a heated back-and-forth featuring journalists, fans, and football analysts.

But the spiciest reaction so far?
A direct, fiery warning from popular journalist Osasu Obayiuwana.

‘We Don’t Want A Samuel Eto’o Situation’ — Osasu Raises Eyebrows

Osasu Obayiuwana didn’t mince words when responding to the reports.
He went straight to X (formerly Twitter) and dropped a statement that had football fans scrambling for their popcorn:

“If John Obi Mikel wants to be the NFF president, he should get a proper education like Vincent Kompany, Michael Emenalo and Seyi Olofinjana. We don’t want a Samuel Eto’o situation. The NFF is already bad enough.”

Oof.
Shots fired. Direct, chest-to-chest.

Osasu backed up his point by listing football personalities who upgraded their academic credentials before stepping into leadership roles:

  • Vincent Kompany — MBA from Manchester University

  • Michael Emenalo — Degree in Political Science & International Relations

  • Seyi Olofinjana — Master’s in Sport Directorship

His message was clear: Mikel needs more than passion — he needs preparation.

Mikel Obi Fires Back Respectfully: “I’ve Always Fought For Nigeria”

But Mikel wasn’t rattled.
The ex-Chelsea midfielder calmly defended his record, reminding Nigerians of his loyalty and commitment.

He stated that throughout his career:
“I have never for once said no to my country.”

He emphasised that his criticism of the NFF during Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualification disaster — player strikes, unpaid bonuses, and a heartbreaking loss to DR Congo — was not from a place of personal ambition.

Mikel said he is willing to help Nigerian football only under one condition:
No corruption. Zero tolerance. Full transparency.

He insists Nigeria must “get the right people” and build an environment where players can thrive again.

So… Is Mikel Running For NFF President?

Right now, it’s unclear.
He hasn’t confirmed, denied, or even teased a campaign.

But one thing is certain:
His name alone has already shaken the NFF conversation table.

Some think he’s the fresh, fearless voice Nigerian football needs.
Others agree with Osasu — leadership requires more than reputation.

Either way… this debate is only getting started.
