John Obi Mikel Open To Leadership Role At NFF, Pledges Corruption-Free Tenure
Super Eagles legend John Obi Mikel has expressed his openness to take on a leadership role at the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), pledging a corruption-free tenure should he step into the position.
The former Chelsea midfielder has been one of the most vocal critics of the NFF amid recent accusations of corruption and mismanagement in Nigerian football.
Nigerian Football’s Recent Turmoil
The recent World Cup playoffs exposed cracks in the management of Nigerian football. Players went on strike ahead of the semi-final against Gabon to protest unpaid bonuses, while a loss to DR Congo in the final confirmed Nigeria would miss consecutive World Cups.
These setbacks triggered widespread criticism of the NFF leadership, with Mikel calling for significant reforms and accountability.
Mikel On Taking A Leadership Role
According to Brila.net, the 38-year-old former captain stressed his willingness to contribute positively, emphasizing his loyalty and integrity:
“One thing I have always done since my early days is fought for the country. I don’t know how many players have done that like I have, through the U17, U20, the senior national team. Years of sacrifice. I have never for once said no to my country.”
Mikel was clear that he would not tolerate corruption:
“When I know I can give my opinion and help, I will always be ready. But again, I won’t have corruption tied to me. I am never going to do that if I am going to say yes. If you want us going forward, you must make sure things are done properly. Get the right people, people that have the same direction and thought so when the players come back home to play, there is a good environment for them to play and perform.”
The former midfielder’s statement signals a potential shift toward reform within the NFF, with one of Nigeria’s most respected footballing figures ready to guide the next generation.
