Matthijs de Ligt frustrated during Manchester United vs Everton Premier League match
Manchester United were handed a major reality check on Monday as they suffered a damaging defeat to 10-man Everton at Goodison Park. The loss ended United’s five-game unbeaten run in the Premier League and left them 10th in the table, 11 points behind leaders Arsenal.
Dutch centre-back Matthijs de Ligt didn’t hold back in his post-match comments, seemingly questioning manager Ruben Amorim’s tactics.
Everton faced major setbacks early in the match, with Idrissa Gueye sent off for clashing with teammate Michael Keane and captain Seamus Coleman forced off with an injury in the 10th minute. Despite playing with a numerical disadvantage for over 80 minutes, the Toffees took the lead through Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall on the half-hour mark and defended resolutely thereafter.
United struggled to exploit the advantage, relying heavily on long balls and crosses. They attempted 38 crosses and won 9 corners, but Everton’s tall defenders comfortably dealt with the aerial threat. The absence of Benjamin Sesko upfront due to injury also hurt United’s attacking options.
Speaking to MUTV, De Ligt was blunt about United’s shortcomings:
“It’s quite clear. A bad night for us. 70 minutes more or less 11 vs 10, conceded a goal and not creating many chances. A few but not enough for a match against 10. A disappointing night. From our side, we didn’t do enough.”
He added:
“We basically played to their strengths. These are the main aspects, but we have to look at ourselves and it’s not good enough. We lacked a bit of urgency in several situations. They get punished if you lack this urgency. If you don’t score, you lose this game. We lacked this hunger to make a difference at the most important moments.”
Ruben Amorim also acknowledged that United deserved the defeat, urging his squad to respond immediately:
“I think they were a better team with 11. They then worked really well with 10 men for 70 minutes. So we deserved to lose. We didn’t play well. We didn’t play with the right intensity.”
The Portuguese coach admitted concern about repeating last season’s struggles:
“I feel afraid of returning to this feeling of last season, that is my biggest concern. We need to be perfect to win games. We were not perfect. We are going to work together and prepare for the next match.”
Manchester United now face an important period of reflection as they try to recover in the Premier League. With their attacking inefficiency and tactical approach under scrutiny, both players and management will need to address the issues highlighted by De Ligt if they are to compete for top positions this season.
