Some moments in football feel like destiny — until fate shows up with its own plans.
For Yakubu Aiyegbeni, one of Nigeria’s most iconic strikers, a dream move to Chelsea was just hours away from becoming reality… until injury struck at the worst possible time.
The former Super Eagles forward, respected across Europe for his ruthless finishing, has finally opened up about the heartbreaking moment his Chelsea transfer collapsed.
Yakubu’s Premier League legacy is almost untouchable.
With 95 Premier League goals, he stands tall as the highest-scoring Nigerian in the competition, achieving this across Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Everton, and Blackburn.
But according to him, things could have been even bigger.
Speaking on the Home Turf Podcast, Yakubu revealed that Chelsea had already reached the negotiation phase with Everton ahead of the January 2009 window.
Then it all fell apart.
“I was unlucky not to play for Chelsea. I got a chance to sign for Chelsea, and then I got injured,” he said.
It was supposed to be the next chapter in a remarkable career — a jump to a title-contending club with Champions League pedigree.
At the time, Yakubu had started the season brightly with four goals and an assist.
Chelsea were ready to pay a reported £15 million to bring him to Stamford Bridge.
But disaster struck on the very day discussions were ongoing.
A ruptured Achilles ended his season instantly.
“I didn’t play for 11 months,” he recalled.
“I was crying in the dressing room because it was my time to play for one of the bigger clubs.”
It wasn’t just a setback — it was a dream snatched away in real time.
While many players never recover from such an injury, Yakubu fought his way back.
He later played for Leicester City and then returned to the Premier League with Blackburn, where he rediscovered his scoring touch once again.
Even with the Chelsea opportunity gone, he carved out a career that remains legendary.
Yakubu admits the missed Chelsea move still lingers, but he holds no regrets.
“I think I did everything,” he said — and he’s right.
From Israel to England, from underdog teams to league giants, Yakubu proved that talent, power, and grit don’t need a big club to shine.
Would he have scored even more goals in Chelsea blue?
Possibly.
Would he still be a legend today?
Absolutely.
His story is a powerful reminder that even when destiny shifts course, greatness can still find its way.
