Mikel Arteta looking concerned on the touchline during an Arsenal match
The tension ahead of the North London Derby has taken a dramatic turn, with Arsenal and Tottenham heading into the clash under completely opposite conditions. While Arsenal are counting losses, Tottenham are collecting returns.
Mikel Arteta has confirmed that defender Gabriel Magalhães will be out for “weeks” after sustaining a thigh injury on international duty with Brazil. The timing could not be worse for a team sitting top of the Premier League with the best defensive record so far.
Arteta didn’t hide the concern:
“Gabi is going to be out for weeks. It’s a blow because he’s our leader in the backline.”
Reports suggest he could miss up to two months, taking him out of action for the remainder of 2025 and possibly into mid-January. A quicker return around Christmas remains the best-case scenario.
To make matters worse, Riccardo Calafiori is also a doubt after returning from Italy duty with a hip problem. He hasn’t trained since returning to London and will undergo a final assessment before the derby.
Before the break, Arsenal were already coping with absences involving Martin Ødegaard, Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz, Viktor Gyokeres, Noni Madueke and Gabriel Jesus. Some are close to returning, but uncertainty remains.
With Gabriel ruled out, Arteta is expected to rely on Piero Hincapié or Cristhian Mosquera to partner William Saliba. Both options offer quality, but neither brings Gabriel’s experience or presence in high-pressure fixtures like this one.
On the other side of London, Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank delivered a wave of positive updates. Pape Matar Sarr, Lucas Bergvall, Randal Kolo Muani, and Mohammed Kudus have all returned to training and are available for selection.
Frank confirmed:
“Pape trained today. Ready, available. Lucas trained today. Ready. Kolo Muani is available too — he’ll play with a mask.”
Dominic Solanke remains unavailable due to his long-term ankle issue, but Spurs are in far better shape than Arsenal. They also welcomed back Radu Dragusin, Archie Gray, Ben Davies and Kota Takai to full training.
Arsenal enter the derby bruised, stretched, and relying on makeshift solutions at the back. Tottenham arrive refreshed, reinforced, and confident.
The contrast sets up a derby with huge implications — not just for bragging rights, but for the title race landscape.
