Victor Font Vows To Call Lionel Messi First If He Wins Barcelona Presidency

Barcelona’s 2026 presidential race has taken an emotional turn, with candidate Victor Font promising that his very first action — if he wins the election — will be to pick up the phone and call Lionel Messi. The pledge immediately electrified fans, especially after Messi’s emotional recent visit to the under-construction Camp Nou, where he hinted at wanting a final goodbye on the pitch.

For many supporters, the idea of Messi returning to Barcelona — in any capacity — feels like a dream the club has been chasing since the Argentine legend departed in 2021. And Victor Font has made it clear: he wants to turn that dream into reality.

Messi’s Camp Nou Legacy Still Echoes

Messi’s story at Barcelona remains one of football’s most iconic journeys. Rising through La Masia, debuting in 2004, and becoming the undisputed greatest player in the club’s history, he rewrote record books while collecting 10 La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies. Under Pep Guardiola, his evolution into a false nine reshaped modern football.

Individually, he lifted seven of his eight Ballon d’Or awards during his time in Catalunya — a run no other player has ever matched at one club.

But in 2021, amid severe financial turmoil, Barcelona lost their biggest star for free. Messi joined Paris Saint-Germain, then later moved to MLS side Inter Miami, where he continues to dominate even while playing in a league still growing in global stature.

Though he is contracted to Miami until 2028, Messi’s recent visit to Camp Nou sparked hope. In a heartfelt post, he expressed his desire to return for a proper goodbye — something he never received.

Font’s Bold Promise: “My First Call Will Be To Messi”

In an interview with Mundo Deportivo, Victor Font made his intentions crystal clear.

The first thing I’ll do after winning the presidency is call Messi.”

Font says the club should stop using Messi for political gain and instead genuinely embrace him. He criticized Joan Laporta for breaking the promise to keep Messi at the club during the 2021 elections, calling it a misuse of the Argentine’s legacy.

Font highlighted that Messi should be brought back only with respect — and in whatever role he desires, whether on the pitch for a farewell appearance or in an ambassadorial or institutional capacity.

Laporta Under Fire As Election Heats Up

With the 2026 election approaching, Font is positioning himself as the candidate of transparency and restoration. He has accused Laporta and his board of concealing €80 million in losses and questioned how construction company Limak was chosen for the Camp Nou redevelopment.

Adding fuel to the fire, former coach Xavi publicly attended Font’s event and declared his support — a move that instantly raised the stakes in this political showdown.

In contrast, Laporta’s broken promise to keep Messi in 2021 still hangs over his administration. Former Barcelona director Xavier Vilajoana even accused him of lying directly to fans.

A Potential Messi Return? More Than Just A Dream

Font believes that Messi’s eventual return to Barcelona is not just possible — but essential.

“We need to embrace Messi and ensure he gets the role he wants,” Font emphasized. “A statue is not enough.”

Whether Messi returns as a player, advisor, sporting director, or ambassador, his influence would be invaluable to Barcelona’s identity, brand, and global power.

And with Font promising to make that call — the entire football world will be watching closely as the elections draw nearer.
