Ademola Lookman’s Turbulent Season: From European Glory To Italian Scrutiny
Ademola Lookman is back in the headlines—but for reasons far from the fairytale season he once enjoyed. After a standout 2023/2024 campaign where he became the pride of Bergamo, the Europa League hero, and Africa’s reigning attacking sensation, the Nigerian forward now finds himself navigating a stormy chapter of his career.
The criticism in Italy has become louder and sharper, especially after Nigeria’s painful failure to secure a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. With emotions still raw from the Super Eagles’ playoff defeat to DR Congo, Italian media has wasted no time tying Lookman’s national disappointment to his on-field struggles at Atalanta.
Stefano Agresti of Gazzetta dello Sport delivered one of the harshest assessments yet. He described Lookman as “a former king who has lost his way,” pointing out the stark contrast between the player who once electrified Europe and the one currently struggling to find rhythm.
According to Agresti, Lookman’s downturn began in the summer transfer window. The forward reportedly pushed hard for a move to Inter Milan and even chose the “traumatic path” by deserting pre-season duties. Things escalated when Lookman deleted every Atalanta-related image from his Instagram page—an act fans and analysts considered a symbolic breakup with the club.
Atalanta, however, stood firm. Their €50 million valuation remained non-negotiable, and Inter refused to meet it. With the move blocked, Lookman was frozen out for weeks, missing vital preparation time and losing match sharpness.
Now back in the squad, the Nigerian forward has managed just one goal in ten appearances this season. For a player who once lit up European nights, it’s a frustrating slump—and the Italian football world isn’t holding back.
But all hope is not lost.
If Lookman’s story has taught football fans anything, it’s that he thrives under pressure. From redemption arcs to underdog heroics, he has rebuilt himself before. This moment may just be the early chapter of another comeback.
And as the global spotlight remains fixed on sports markets, football analytics, athlete performance trends, and transfer economics, Lookman’s situation is a textbook case of how quickly fortunes can shift in the modern game.
For now, the big question remains: can he bounce back?
At Sports Market International, we’ll be tracking every twist, every goal, and every headline—because this season is far from over.
