La Equidad Struggles In 2025 Colombian Campaign

La Equidad, the Colombian club with backing from Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds, Rob McElhenney, and Eva Longoria, has endured a disastrous 2025 season, finishing at the very bottom of the league. Despite a 4-0 victory against Deportivo Pereira in their final outing, the team ended the campaign with just three wins, twelve defeats, and a goal difference of -15.

The 2025 season was a major learning curve for the new owners, who had hoped to replicate the fairy tale success experienced at Wrexham in Wales.

Relocation And Rebranding Plans

With a poor showing on the pitch, La Equidad is preparing for major changes in 2026. Reports suggest the club will undergo a complete rebrand, including a new name, new colours, and potentially a move out of their Bogotá base. Colombian journalist Felipe Sierra noted that the relocation process is underway, with key documents expected to be signed soon.

Club president Nicolas Maya apologised to fans for the disappointing campaign but hinted at optimism for the future. “We made risky decisions, betting on young talent and building a model with projection, but not everything went as we wanted,” he said. “Even so, we are convinced it was a necessary step to start building something lasting and sustainable.”

Star-Studded Ownership Group

La Equidad was acquired by a U.S. consortium in January 2025, fronted by real estate investor Al Tylis and Club Necaxa executive Sam Porter. The ownership group also includes Reynolds, McElhenney, Longoria, MLB superstar Justin Verlander, and his wife, model Kate Upton. The consortium purchased a 99 percent stake in the club for a reported valuation of over $30 million (£23m).

The new owners have expressed their desire to combine sporting ambitions with storytelling, similar to what they did with Wrexham and Necaxa, delivering documentary content that chronicles the rise of their clubs on and off the pitch.
