Could Liverpool Still Sell Mohamed Salah? Ex-Reds Star Explains Why Transfer Is Possible Despite New Contract

Liverpool fans may have more than just their Premier League hopes to think about this season, as questions linger over Mohamed Salah’s future at Anfield. Despite signing a new contract that ties him to the Reds until 2027, former Liverpool goalkeeper David James believes a transfer could still happen under the right circumstances.

Salah has been a prolific force at Liverpool, scoring 250 goals and claiming four Golden Boots. Yet, even with that record, the 33-year-old forward’s form this season and growing interest from the Saudi Pro League means a potential move cannot be entirely ruled out.

James, speaking exclusively to GOAL, explained the dynamics at play: “Liverpool didn’t have to sign Mo Salah, and Mo Salah didn’t have to sign for Liverpool. In the end, the deal was right for both parties. But you could envisage a situation where Mo’s numbers aren’t what Liverpool need. And if there were a potential suitor somewhere else, I’m sure with conversation, Liverpool would be willing to let him go.”

The ex-England international added that Salah himself would likely have a say in any potential transfer: “Under contract, I don’t see Mo just hanging around to get paid. There would be dialogue between him and the club to discuss the future.”

Salah’s age is no barrier to continued performance. James pointed to legends like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi to highlight Salah’s longevity: “Mo’s only 33. People talk about losing pace, but I don’t think he has. At 33, it’s true the guy’s got another contract in him, easily.”

Liverpool’s approach could also involve planning for the future. James hinted that the club may already have potential replacements in mind to mitigate any risk should Salah leave.

For now, Salah’s focus remains on rediscovering his form and continuing to make an impact on the pitch. But the reality of modern football—especially with big-spending clubs in the Middle East—means nothing can be taken for granted. Liverpool fans might just need to brace for all possibilities when it comes to their superstar forward.
