Revealed: Why Kylian Mbappe Has Suddenly Been Removed From France Squad As Captain Returns To Real Madrid
France have sent Kylian Mbappe back to Real Madrid after the star forward reported persistent ankle inflammation, cutting his international break short despite scoring twice in France’s 4-0 win over Ukraine. The national team captain returned to Spain to undergo further medical assessment, forcing Didier Deschamps to adjust his squad ahead of the final World Cup qualifier in Azerbaijan.
Mbappe, alongside Eduardo Camavinga and Manu Kone, was released early from the squad. Kone is serving a suspension, Camavinga is nursing a hamstring strain, and Mbappe has been managing recurring inflammation in his right ankle for several weeks. The issue resurfaced after France’s victory over Ukraine, prompting concern from both the national team and Madrid’s medical staff.
The France Football Federation (FFF) stressed that Mbappe’s removal is precautionary. While the inflammation is persistent, there is no indication of a major injury. Madrid prefers to monitor him closely ahead of their upcoming La Liga and Champions League fixtures. Sources indicate that barring any new complications, Mbappe is expected to be fit after the international break.
With Mbappe sidelined, Hugo Ekitike gets an opportunity to step up. The Liverpool striker has impressed in limited minutes for France, scoring and assisting in just 23 minutes against Ukraine. Sunday’s qualifier in Azerbaijan offers Ekitike a chance to cement his role in the squad in Mbappe’s absence.
Camavinga is also returning to Madrid after a week without training due to hamstring discomfort. France called up Khephren Thuram as cover, but both Camavinga and Mbappe are expected to rejoin Real Madrid fully fit after the break.
