Sunday Oliseh Hails Benjamin Fredrick After Stellar Performance In Nigeria’s 4–1 Win Over Gabon

Nigeria’s 4–1 playoff victory over Gabon may have pushed the Super Eagles closer to the 2026 World Cup, but for many fans, one name stole the spotlight — Benjamin Fredrick.

And if you needed confirmation of just how impressive the young defender was, Sunday Oliseh himself has entered the chat.

Oliseh Shows Big Love To Fredrick

After the match, Oliseh took to X to hail the 20-year-old, writing:

“I personally found Benjamin Fredrick to be the most influential player yesterday versus Gabon. Always well positioned, pacy, decisive and played simple.”

In a game filled with drama, missed chances and late goals, it was Fredrick’s calm head and clean defending that kept Nigeria steady. The on-loan Brentford youngster played with the poise of a player who has been wearing the Super Eagles jersey for 10 years — not someone making only his second competitive start.

Not Just Defending — It Was Defensive Mastery

While Victor Osimhen eventually stole headlines with two extra-time goals (and redeemed himself after earlier misses), Fredrick quietly shut down everything Gabon tried to build.

He read the game like he had the answer sheet in his pocket.
He tracked runs before they even happened.
He refused to give Aubameyang the slightest breathing room.

There was even a moment in the first half when he collected the ball deep under pressure — and instead of blasting it into the nearest village, he calmly retained possession like a defender who has ice in his veins.

A Rising Star Becoming Undroppable

Two months ago, hardly anyone expected Fredrick to start ahead of captain William Troost-Ekong. Now? Nobody is asking questions anymore — everybody is nodding.

His intelligence, discipline and maturity are shocking for his age. Each match he plays strengthens his case as Nigeria’s next long-term defensive leader.

And Oliseh seems to agree. He wrapped up his praise with a rallying cry:
“Now let’s celebrate today. But from tomorrow, CONGO needs to be our next victim.”

A New Era Loading For Nigeria’s Defence

If Fredrick maintains this level, Nigeria may be witnessing the birth of the next great Super Eagles centre-back — the type who anchors the defence for a decade.

The Super Eagles don’t just have a rising talent.
They might have a defensive pillar in the making.
