Aubameyang Hails Nigeria Defender Benjamin Fredrick After Super Eagles’ 4-1 Win Over Gabon
Nigeria international Benjamin Fredrick caught the eye of Gabon star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after the Super Eagles’ 4-1 victory in the 2026 World Cup playoffs in Morocco.
The 20-year-old defender, on loan at Belgium’s FC Dender from Brentford, was making just his fifth competitive appearance for Nigeria. Paired with Calvin Bassey, Fredrick proved a rock at the back, not losing a single duel against the experienced Gabonese squad. His composure and tactical awareness frustrated Aubameyang throughout the match, which went into extra time following a 1-1 draw in regular time.
Fredrick capped off an impressive performance by assisting Victor Osimhen’s fourth goal, intercepting the ball from Aubameyang before setting up the striker.
Speaking briefly at the mix zone after the game, a disappointed Aubameyang praised the young Nigerian:
“The kid is good and I wish him the best in his career,” he said while walking away.
Fredrick’s performance not only helped secure a dominant Super Eagles win but also showcased his potential as a rising star in Nigerian football. With such composure at just 20 years old, the defender looks set for a bright future both domestically and internationally.
