Victor Osimhen’s Heroics Seal Nigeria’s 4-1 Victory Over Gabon In CAF 2026 World Cup Play-Off Thriller

Victor Osimhen’s Heroics Seal Nigeria’s 4-1 Victory Over Gabon In CAF 2026 World Cup Play-Off Thriller

The Super Eagles of Nigeria took a massive step toward qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a thrilling 4-1 extra-time victory over Gabon in Rabat, Morocco.

The encounter was nothing short of drama, passion, and pure football brilliance, as Victor Osimhen produced a spectacular performance — scoring twice in extra time to seal the win for Nigeria.

First-Half Battle: Missed Chances And Near Goals

The game began with both teams pressing high. Alex Iwobi, Ademola Lookman, and Samuel Chukwueze created early chances, but Gabon’s goalkeeper, Loyce Mbaba, stood firm.

Nigeria thought they had taken the lead in the 27th minute through Osimhen’s header, but the referee ruled the ball hadn’t fully crossed the line.

Despite Nigeria’s dominance, the first half ended goalless, with Stanley Nwabali keeping the team safe from Aubameyang’s and Bouanga’s attacking threats.

Second Half: Akor Adams Strikes First

The breakthrough came in the 78th minute when Akor Adams found the net after a beautiful link-up with Ndidi and Iwobi. The goal sent Nigerian fans into wild celebration.

However, Gabon equalized in the 89th minute through Mario Lemina, forcing the game into extra time.

Extra Time Magic: Osimhen Turns Up The Heat

In extra time, Nigeria turned the game around completely.

  • 97th Minute: Ejuke restored Nigeria’s lead with a well-placed finish.

  • 102nd Minute: Osimhen fired in a thunderous shot after a fine assist from Fredrick.

  • 110th Minute: The Napoli striker struck again with a sensational solo effort — chest control, flick, and strike straight into the net!

By the final whistle, the scoreboard read Nigeria 4 – 1 Gabon, with the Super Eagles soaring high and fans chanting Osimhen’s name across Rabat.

Coach Eric Chelle’s Reaction

Head coach Eric Chelle praised his players’ resilience and composure, saying:

“We showed character. Even when Gabon equalized, the boys didn’t panic. Osimhen was phenomenal — this is what leadership looks like.”

What’s Next For The Super Eagles

With this emphatic victory, Nigeria stands in a commanding position heading into the final play-off stage. Another strong performance could see the Super Eagles return to the World Cup stage — co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico in 2026.
