Ross Barkley has opened up about one of the most challenging chapters of his career — his battle with alcohol and the discipline he received from former Chelsea manager Frank Lampard after going out drinking before a crucial match.
Once tipped to be the next big thing in English football, Barkley’s early career at Everton showed flashes of brilliance that had fans comparing him to the greats. But as his fame grew, so did the pressures — and behind the scenes, he was fighting personal battles that would derail his progress.
Barkley’s move from Everton to Chelsea was supposed to be a dream come true. Instead, it became a turning point where discipline and distractions took center stage.
In an interview with The Athletic, Barkley admitted that alcohol became an unhealthy escape during his time at Stamford Bridge.
“A few times I went out, and if you drink too much, you do things you regret. I’d go out and have too much to drink, and then it would get back to the club,” he said.
One night out in Liverpool before a midweek game proved to be a major wake-up call. Barkley was filmed drinking, and the footage made headlines across tabloids. When Lampard found out, he handled the situation with both firmness and empathy.
“One time, I went out on a Sunday in Liverpool and we had a game on a Wednesday. I got videoed, and then it was in the paper,” Barkley revealed.
“Lampard told me to learn from it and pick the right moments. The punishment was that I travelled with the team but wasn’t on the bench. I had to watch the game on the coach. That was hard to take.”
It was a moment that shaped how Barkley was perceived by fans and the media — a reminder of how easily mistakes can define a career.
The incident wasn’t isolated. In 2019, while recovering from injury, Barkley was again in the headlines after being filmed dancing shirtless in a Dubai nightclub. Although he had permission for the trip, the optics caused another round of scrutiny.
Lampard, however, took a measured approach:
“He showed a moment of a lack of professionalism… but I understand players are human. All Ross needs to do now is show his reaction on the pitch.”
Today, at 31, Barkley reflects with honesty and growth. He admitted that his confidence often dipped during his early years and that therapy and sports psychology helped him navigate his struggles.
“You’ve got to self-reflect. It’s good to speak to people and learn from mistakes. I’ve spoken to a sports psychologist and had therapy throughout my career — it’s been beneficial,” he said.
“In football, you can lose your confidence. I’ve lost mine when I was younger. Now I look back and wish my approach back then was the same as now.”
Barkley’s story serves as a powerful reminder that behind every football star is a human being navigating fame, pressure, and mistakes. His willingness to talk about his mental health and past struggles is not just refreshing — it’s inspiring for the next generation of players learning to balance talent with discipline.
