Jannik Sinner celebrates victory over Alexander Zverev at the ATP Finals in Turin.
Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner produced a masterclass in composure and precision to defeat Alexander Zverev 6-4, 6-3 and book his place in the ATP Finals semi-finals in Turin. The second seed not only kept his title defence alive but also stayed in contention for the year-end world number one ranking.
Sinner, 24, showcased his incredible serving prowess, saving all seven break points he faced — including one ace that left Zverev literally biting his racquet in frustration.
The win marks Sinner’s fifth consecutive victory over Zverev, further underlining his growing dominance on the ATP Tour.
“I felt like I was serving very well in the important moments. Sascha played great tennis, and I’m very pleased with how I handled it,” said Sinner after the match.
In many ways, this encounter epitomized the gap between the game’s current elite — Sinner, Alcaraz, and Djokovic — and the rest of the field.
Zverev served well, fought hard, and created multiple chances, but Sinner’s laser-like focus shut the door every single time. The Italian finished with 28 winners to just 14 unforced errors, dropping only eight points behind his first serve.
Whenever Zverev had a break opportunity, Sinner responded with an ace or a powerful winner, neutralizing the German’s momentum before it could build.
Sinner’s victory means he is the first player through to the semi-finals, but his chase for the No.1 ranking still depends on rival Carlos Alcaraz’s performance. The Spaniard must defeat Lorenzo Musetti and reach the final to keep his hopes alive.
Elsewhere, Felix Auger-Aliassime kept his campaign alive with a hard-fought 4-6, 7-6 (9-7), 7-5 victory over Ben Shelton. The Canadian overcame a shaky start and used his improved return game to edge past the big-serving American.
“It was a weird start, but as the match went on, I was finding ways to put returns in the court,” Auger-Aliassime admitted.
The result means the winner between Auger-Aliassime and Zverev on Friday will advance alongside Sinner.
In doubles action, Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski continued their brilliant run, defeating Henry Patten and Harri Heliovaara 7-6 (9-7), 3-6, 10-7 to reach the semi-finals. They’re now aiming to become the first all-British pair to win the ATP Finals title.
This thrilling chapter in Turin not only cements Jannik Sinner’s status as one of the world’s most composed players under pressure but also sets up a nail-biting weekend as the ATP Finals race heats up.
