Augustine Eguavoen Criticises Timing Of Super Eagles Protest But Backs Team To Bounce Back

Augustine Eguavoen Criticises Timing Of Super Eagles Protest But Backs Team To Bounce Back

Former Super Eagles coach and current NFF Technical Director, Augustine Eguavoen, has expressed disappointment over the timing of the players’ recent protest in Rabat.

The Super Eagles had boycotted training ahead of their crucial 2026 World Cup playoff clash against Gabon, citing unpaid bonuses and allowances—a recurring issue in Nigerian football.

Eguavoen Criticises Timing But Supports Players

Speaking to NFF media, Eguavoen admitted that while the players were justified in demanding their payments, the timing of their strike was far from ideal.

“The timing of the strike was wrong. They might have had their reasons, but the timing was not the best,” he said.

He went on to note that such distractions could easily affect preparation and focus ahead of a decisive game.

Still, Eguavoen showed confidence in the team’s determination, adding,

“These boys want to go to the World Cup, that’s every footballer’s dream.”

Resolution Brings Relief Ahead Of Gabon Clash

The tense standoff in Rabat was finally resolved after several hours of negotiation between the NFF and the National Sports Commission.

Captain William Troost-Ekong confirmed via social media that the players had received their outstanding payments, allowing training to resume smoothly on Wednesday evening.

Although the immediate tension has been resolved, Eguavoen’s comments highlight the lingering administrative frustrations that continue to plague Nigerian football.

Now, all eyes are on the Super Eagles as they aim to deliver a strong performance in Thursday’s decisive encounter against Gabon, where their World Cup qualification hopes hang in the balance.
