How Sean McVay And Mikel Arteta Are Redefining Cross-Sport Collaboration At KSE
A year ago, Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay admitted he was “not in a great place” after a crushing home loss left their NFL playoff hopes hanging by a thread. The turnaround, however, came thanks to an unexpected source: Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.
Arteta happened to be visiting the Rams’ training facility during football’s international break. The two coaches spent two hours discussing player connections, leadership, and strategies. “Sean took a step back from the day-to-day of ‘we just lost to Miami’ and into ‘this is what makes a great leader, this is how we do it,’” Rams president Kevin Demoff told BBC Sport. McVay would go on to win six of his next seven games, clinching the NFC West before being halted by eventual Super Bowl winners, the Philadelphia Eagles.
The bond between McVay and Arteta highlights a unique cross-sport synergy within Kroenke Sports & Entertainment (KSE), the global sports empire valued at $21.2 billion. Both coaches, young when they were appointed, share a curiosity and drive for excellence, learning from each other despite coaching different sports.
“They are like sponges,” Arsenal chief executive Richard Garlick said. “They take stuff in, invite reflection, and are brave enough to ask players what they think.” Both McVay and Arteta have benefited from KSE’s hands-off, trust-driven approach, which empowers them to execute their vision while developing young talent—whether it’s Bukayo Saka at Arsenal or Puka Nacua at the Rams.
Cross-sport collaboration at KSE goes beyond formal sessions. Rams staff have learned from Arsenal’s tracking technology, while Arsenal coaches have adopted NFL-inspired camera and analytics systems. This openness fosters a culture of shared learning and competitiveness that drives every team under the KSE umbrella.
The partnership also has global implications. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Los Angeles, the 2027 Super Bowl, and the 2028 Olympics, KSE aims to leverage its cross-Atlantic sports expertise to grow fanbases, increase revenue, and strengthen brand recognition across the US and UK.
Ultimately, the McVay-Arteta collaboration exemplifies how innovation, curiosity, and shared values can transcend sports, proving that leadership lessons from one arena can invigorate performance in another.
