Kylian Mbappe Playfully Tells Upamecano There Are “Better Teams” Than Bayern Munich Amid Real Madrid Links
Kylian Mbappe has stirred transfer excitement once again — this time with a cheeky jab at Bayern Munich and a playful invitation for his France teammate Dayot Upamecano to consider joining him at Real Madrid.
The Bayern defender’s contract situation has become one of the most-watched sagas in European football, with his current deal expiring in 2026 and no agreement yet reached for an extension. As Real Madrid continue their search for a long-term defensive leader, Mbappe’s comments have only added fuel to the speculation fire.
Madrid’s Eyes On Upamecano
Reports in Spain suggest Los Blancos are quietly monitoring the situation, even holding early talks with Upamecano’s representatives. The 27-year-old centre-back has been a defensive pillar under Vincent Kompany at Bayern, but uncertainty around his future could open the door for a sensational move to Madrid.
With long-term concerns about David Alaba and Eder Militao’s fitness, Madrid see Upamecano as the ideal addition — young, experienced, and perfectly in sync with the club’s French contingent led by Mbappe himself.
Mbappe’s Cheeky Hint
Speaking ahead of France’s World Cup qualifiers, Mbappe was full of praise for his teammate but couldn’t resist poking fun when asked whether Upamecano should stay in Munich.
“He’s doing very well, very confident. He’s one of the best defenders in the world,” Mbappe said with a grin. “He’s at a big club, Bayern… there’s not much better — but there are better ones [smiles].”
The playful line sent fans into a frenzy, with many interpreting it as a clear nod toward Madrid. Mbappe, who has a history of cryptic transfer comments, quickly added that he didn’t want to put pressure on his compatriot — but the hint had already landed.
Upamecano’s Calm Response
While Mbappe’s remarks lit up social media, Upamecano himself has stayed composed. Speaking to L’Équipe, he said he’s letting his representatives handle contract talks and remains focused on Bayern’s season.
“My agent is taking care of it. I’m focused on my goals with the club and the national team,” he said. “I’m relaxed and grateful that clubs are interested.”
The Madrid Connection
Upamecano’s agent, Moussa Sissoko — who also represents Ousmane Dembélé — is known for his sharp negotiating style and deep ties in French football. With Real Madrid’s interest reportedly growing and Florentino Pérez always alert to free-transfer opportunities, this could become one of the defining stories of the next transfer window.
For Mbappe and Madrid fans, the idea of a French defensive wall joining the club’s new galáctico project is more than just speculation — it’s becoming a tantalizing possibility.
