Eric Chelle Apologizes For Omitting Paul Onuachu From Super Eagles World Cup Qualifiers Squad
Nigeria’s senior national team head coach Eric Chelle has publicly apologized for not including prolific striker Paul Onuachu in his final 24-man squad for the World Cup qualifiers playoff.
Onuachu, who has been in sensational form for Turkish side Trabzonspor, scoring 8 goals in 12 league appearances, was initially named in the provisional squad for the mini-tournament in Morocco.
However, the 31-year-old was left out of the final squad, with Chelle opting for the attacking trio of Victor Osimhen, Tolu Arokodare, and Jerome Akor.
Chelle Explains The Decision
Speaking exclusively at the team’s hotel in Morocco, Chelle explained the difficult choice and extended his apology to Onuachu:
“I can’t pick everyone in my team at the moment. There is a number which is 24, and I am sorry for leaving out the striker (Onuachu) who has done well. It’s part of our job to make uncomfortable decisions, but I am confident in working with the group I have had for some time.”
Chelle’s remarks underline the challenges national team coaches face when balancing form, tactics, and squad dynamics, especially ahead of high-stakes playoffs.
Onuachu’s Form Makes His Exclusion Surprising
Paul Onuachu’s absence has sparked debates among fans and analysts alike, given his goal-scoring exploits this season in Turkey. His physical presence and finishing ability have made him one of Nigeria’s most effective forwards in Europe, heightening questions about his omission.
The Super Eagles will now turn their focus to the crucial World Cup qualifiers playoff against Gabon, with expectations high for the selected squad to deliver results in Morocco.
Sports Market Takeaway
While Onuachu misses out, Chelle’s apology reflects professionalism and transparency in decision-making — important traits in the fast-moving world of international football. The Super Eagles camp now focuses on preparation, strategy, and unity, as Nigeria aims to secure a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
