Gernot Rohr supports Nigeria Super Eagles ahead of 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs
Former Super Eagles boss Gernot Rohr has declared his full support for Nigeria as they gear up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup African playoffs.
After narrowly missing out on automatic qualification, the Super Eagles have a second chance to soar — and this time, all eyes are on them. The playoff tournament in Rabat, Morocco, will feature four football powerhouses: Nigeria, Gabon, Cameroon, and DR Congo.
Nigeria kicks off their campaign with a semi-final clash against Gabon, and if victorious, they’ll face Cameroon or DR Congo for Africa’s coveted World Cup ticket.
Rohr, who once guided the Super Eagles to the 2018 World Cup in Russia and a bronze medal finish at AFCON 2019, spoke fondly of his former side while appearing on Brila FM.
“Super Eagles have so many high-level players and strikers. We tried against them but we could not do it,” Rohr admitted. “We beat them during the qualifiers and it’s a result we were proud of, but I will be supporting the Super Eagles in the playoffs.”
The veteran tactician’s comments come after his Benin Republic side suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to Nigeria in Uyo — a result that sealed Nigeria’s spot in the playoffs.
Now under the leadership of Eric Chelle, the Super Eagles are determined to make their mark. With stars like Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Samuel Chukwueze leading the charge, the team’s blend of experience and youth has fans buzzing with excitement.
As the countdown to kickoff continues, Rohr’s show of support adds an emotional twist — the mentor cheering on his former team to succeed where he once led them.
Could this be the Super Eagles’ moment to reclaim their spot among football’s elite? The stage is set, and the world will be watching.
