Gabon coach Thierry Mouyouma discusses tactics ahead of World Cup playoff against Nigeria Super Eagles
As the countdown begins for the 2026 FIFA World Cup African playoffs, Gabon’s national team coach, Thierry Mouyouma, has unveiled his tactical blueprint to silence Nigeria’s Super Eagles and their high-flying attack led by Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman.
Mouyouma made this known while announcing a 27-man squad filled with a balance of experienced veterans and hungry young talents, as the Panthers prepare for a tough battle in Rabat, Morocco.
The first leg of the encounter is set for Thursday, November 13, 2025, at the C.S. Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan Stadium, with the winner advancing to face either Cameroon or DR Congo in the next round.
Speaking to the Gabonese Press Agency, Mouyouma admitted that his team must adapt their tactics to match the power and pace of Nigeria’s attack.
“We will have to change things against Nigeria, particularly on a tactical and even technical level,” he explained.
Known for his possession-based football philosophy, the Gabonese tactician highlighted that controlling the game’s rhythm will be crucial if Gabon hopes to overcome the Super Eagles’ experience and attacking depth.
“It is important that we control our opponent’s emotions. We need to make them chase the ball and force them to play behind their lines,” he added.
The Panthers finished second in Group E with 25 points, just one behind Côte d’Ivoire, showing that they are no pushovers on the African stage.
With Nigeria’s attacking trio of Osimhen, Lookman, and Chukwueze in red-hot form, and Mouyouma’s determination to keep them in check, fans can expect a thrilling tactical showdown in Rabat.
