World Cup 2026

Lionel Messi Hints At 2026 World Cup Comeback, Calls Tournament “Extraordinary”

Lionel Messi may not be done with the FIFA World Cup just yet. The Inter Miami superstar has hinted that he could feature for Argentina at the 2026 World Cup, calling the event “extraordinary” and sparking excitement among football fans worldwide.

Questions have lingered over whether the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, who turns 39 next summer, would make one final appearance on football’s grandest stage. But Messi’s recent comments suggest he hasn’t ruled out the idea of leading Argentina’s title defense in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Messi, who guided the Albiceleste to glory in Qatar 2022, has achieved virtually everything in football — from multiple Champions League triumphs with Barcelona to the Copa América and the World Cup with Argentina. His international record is equally breathtaking: 195 caps and 114 goals, making him his country’s all-time top scorer.

Speaking at the American Business Forum in Florida, Messi said:

“I have very high expectations that the World Cup is going to be something extraordinary. There are going to be some great matches. Teams from all over the world are coming, and some of them are very big.”

While he previously suggested that the 2022 tournament might be his last, his tone has now shifted — giving fans fresh hope of seeing him in action once again. Messi’s time at Inter Miami has kept him close to the American audience, making a U.S.-hosted World Cup a fitting stage for what could be his final international act.

However, journalist Tomas Guasch urged Messi to join long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo for one final “last dance” in 2026, saying:

“If that World Cup had any appeal, it was the final dance between Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo… It would be a joke for football if Messi doesn’t play. Someone should intervene!”

Whether it’s a farewell tour or one last shot at glory, the thought of Messi gracing another World Cup sends waves of excitement through the global football community. For fans and followers of the sports market, the anticipation surrounding Messi’s possible return ensures that the 2026 World Cup will be nothing short of spectacular.
