Wilfred Ndidi in action for Besiktas during the Istanbul derby against Fenerbahce
Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has opened up on Besiktas’ dramatic 3-2 derby defeat to arch-rivals Fenerbahce, admitting that a first-half red card was the turning point in the match.
The Black Eagles started brightly at Vodafone Park on Sunday night, racing into a 2-0 lead thanks to quick goals from Bilal Touré and Emirhan Topcu. But the momentum shifted when Orkun Kökçü was sent off in the 25th minute for a reckless tackle — leaving Besiktas to battle with 10 men for over an hour.
Fenerbahce made full use of the numerical advantage, with İsmail Yüksek, Marco Asensio, and Jhon Duran scoring to complete a stunning comeback and hand Besiktas a painful derby defeat.
Reflecting on the loss, Ndidi admitted the red card played a key role but emphasized the need for unity and resilience going forward.
“The match was going well for us. We knew we had to do our best. We even went 2-0 up,” Ndidi told the club’s official website.
“When we conceded a goal after the red card, we gave them the momentum they needed. We wanted to stay in the match. We know we have quality. But we need to stay together. We need to be united — fans and players — because we can still achieve great things this season.”
Despite the defeat, Ndidi’s leadership and composure in midfield were once again evident, showing why the Nigerian remains one of the most trusted figures in Besiktas’ setup.
With the Super Lig title race heating up, Ndidi and his teammates will be eager to bounce back quickly as they aim to keep their championship hopes alive.
