Van Dijk Fires Back At Rooney: “Lazy Criticism” Or Fair Comment?
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has hit back at Wayne Rooney’s remarks suggesting a lack of leadership is behind the Reds’ recent struggles, calling the comment “lazy criticism.”
After a stunning title-winning campaign last season under Arne Slot, Liverpool started the 2025-26 season on fire with five consecutive wins. But the spark dimmed quickly — four straight league defeats left fans questioning what went wrong.
And then came Rooney.
The former Manchester United and England legend didn’t hold back, saying Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah hadn’t “really led the team this season.” But Van Dijk wasn’t letting that slide.
“I didn’t hear him last year,” Van Dijk replied after Liverpool snapped their losing streak with a win over Aston Villa. “It doesn’t hurt me… but that comment is a bit of lazy criticism.”
He continued, “It’s easy to blame other players, but we do this together. Last year when things went well, no one said anything. It is what it is.”
To be fair, Rooney doubled down but added some respect:
“I’ve got full respect for Virgil. He’s a fantastic player — one of the best defenders in the world over the past five years. But I stand by my comment.”
Now sitting third in the Premier League, seven points behind Arsenal, Liverpool face a crucial week — a Champions League clash with Real Madrid on Tuesday and a heavyweight Premier League showdown with Manchester City on Sunday.
Van Dijk insists the dressing room remains united:
“We don’t play for a club that makes rash decisions. We believe we can work our way out of this — together.”
Whether you side with Rooney’s pundit realism or Van Dijk’s captain’s pride, one thing’s clear: Liverpool’s next two games will reveal if this comeback talk is for real or just talk.
