Tijani Babangida Backs Olakunle Olusegun As Super Eagles’ Next Speed Star

Former Nigeria international Tijani Babangida has showered praise on Olakunle Olusegun, describing the new Super Eagles winger as a player who reminds him of himself during his prime.

Olusegun, who made his senior debut in Nigeria’s 1-1 friendly draw against Russia, was also part of the squad for the World Cup qualifiers clash against Benin Republic. The young forward came on as a second-half substitute in the thrilling 4-0 victory, helping seal Nigeria’s spot in the World Cup playoff round.

One of the standout features of his performance was his blistering pace, something Babangida — known for his own incredible speed during his playing days — immediately recognized.

“If you talk about speed, then we are similar,” Babangida told OwnGoalNigeria.com. “But he is a young boy with a lot of years ahead of him to reach his level. I wish he gets to the level he is destined for in the shortest time possible.”

Currently on loan at FC Pari from Russian Premier League side Krasnodar, Olusegun has been making waves with his explosive runs and attacking intent. His introduction to the Super Eagles setup adds another dimension to Nigeria’s attacking options, already blessed with the likes of Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze, and Ademola Lookman.

Babangida, who was part of Nigeria’s iconic 1996 Olympic gold-winning team, believes Olusegun’s potential could see him become a key figure for the national team if he continues to develop consistently.

“He has the raw tools — pace, confidence, and hunger. With time and good guidance, he’ll be one of Africa’s best,” Babangida added.

For Nigerian fans, Olusegun’s emergence brings excitement and hope — a reminder that the country’s tradition of producing lightning-fast wingers remains alive and well.
