Brandon Williams Apologises After Marijuana Arrest As Mavericks Edge Pacers In Narrow Win

Dallas Mavericks guard Brandon Williams has apologised to fans and teammates after being arrested for marijuana possession at Dallas Fort Worth Airport on Saturday.

Authorities found less than two ounces of marijuana in his luggage — an amount illegal for recreational use in Texas, even though the NBA no longer prohibits or tests for the substance since 2023.

Williams, 25, missed two games before returning to the lineup in style, scoring 20 points and grabbing seven rebounds off the bench to help the Mavericks secure a 107-105 victory over the Indiana Pacers at the American Airlines Center.

“I can’t really go into further detail,” Williams told reporters. “I just want to apologise for being a distraction. I want to take full accountability.”

The Mavericks currently sit 12th in the Western Conference, having won two of their first five games this season.

Around The League

Elsewhere in the NBA, the Chicago Bulls extended their perfect start to the season, moving to 4-0 after a 126-113 win over the Sacramento Kings. Matas Buzelis starred with 27 points, while Josh Giddey and Nikola Vucevic recorded double-doubles.

In Minneapolis, Austin Reaves hit a buzzer-beater to lift the Los Angeles Lakers to a 116-115 win against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Reaves ended the night with 28 points and 16 assists, stepping up in the absence of LeBron James and Luka Doncic.

Meanwhile, Ja Morant’s 28 points helped the Memphis Grizzlies hand the Phoenix Suns their fourth straight loss, and the Portland Trail Blazers edged the Utah Jazz 136-134, thanks to Jrue Holiday’s clutch free throws.

The New Orleans Pelicans remain the only winless team in the West after a 122-88 defeat to the Denver Nuggets, while Kevin Durant poured in 31 points — including 12 in the fourth quarter — to lead the Houston Rockets past the Toronto Raptors 139-121.

Elsewhere, Cade Cunningham’s 30 points and 10 assists powered the Detroit Pistons to a 135-116 win over the Orlando Magic, who have now lost four straight. The Atlanta Hawks came from 12 points down to beat the Brooklyn Nets 117-112, and Jaylen Brown scored 30 points as the Boston Celtics eased past the Cleveland Cavaliers 125-105.
