Pedri clutching his leg in pain during Barcelona’s match against Real Madrid
Barcelona’s injury crisis has taken another brutal hit as midfield maestro Pedri has been ruled out for over a month after suffering a distal biceps femoris tear in his left thigh. The 22-year-old, who was visibly fatigued during Barcelona’s 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the El Clásico, underwent medical tests that confirmed the serious hamstring injury.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Pedri will miss at least four to five weeks, sidelining him from crucial fixtures against Elche, Club Brugge, Celta Vigo, Athletic Bilbao, Chelsea, and potentially Atletico Madrid.
In an official statement, Barcelona announced:
“The first-team player Pedri has suffered a tear in the distal biceps femoris muscle in his left thigh. The player’s recovery will dictate his return to action.”
Pedri’s injury could not have come at a worse time. He has been the heartbeat of Hansi Flick’s midfield, starting all 13 competitive matches this season and logging more minutes than any other Barcelona player. His passing precision, spatial awareness, and creativity have defined Barca’s rhythm and control. However, his relentless workload—combined with his commitments for Spain’s national team—appears to have finally caught up with him.
Pedri’s setback adds to an ever-growing list of absentees that already includes Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, Gavi, Dani Olmo, Joan Garcia, Andreas Christensen, and Marc-André ter Stegen.
Lewandowski is reportedly nearing full fitness and could feature against Elche, but Gavi and Christensen remain sidelined. Olmo and Garcia have resumed light training but are still weeks away from returning to competitive action.
Flick’s squad depth is now stretched thin, particularly in midfield. Youngsters Marc Casado, Fermin Lopez, and Marc Bernal are expected to step up, while Flick is also considering academy graduates Dro Fernandez and Xavi Espart to fill the void.
With Barcelona now five points behind Real Madrid in La Liga following recent defeats to Sevilla and PSG, Flick faces a major tactical test. The German coach is expected to stick with a 4-2-3-1 formation, deploying Frenkie de Jong alongside Casado in a double pivot to maintain structure.
While Pedri’s injury is a massive blow, it presents an opportunity for Barca’s academy stars to shine—a move that aligns with the club’s long-term philosophy of developing homegrown talent.
In the midst of this chaos, Marcus Rashford has emerged as a bright spot. The English forward has stepped up his performance, contributing four goals and two assists in the Champions League this season, including key performances since Barcelona’s fixture against PSG. Rashford’s pace, pressing, and finishing have offered Flick much-needed attacking balance in the absence of Raphinha.
As Barcelona prepare for their Champions League showdown with Chelsea, Flick’s challenge will be balancing immediate results with long-term player welfare. For Pedri, the month-long break may provide the recovery time his body desperately needs—but for Barcelona, it’s a reminder that their fight for trophies this season may hinge as much on endurance as on brilliance.
