Bernardo Silva Admits Manchester City’s Defensive Weakness After Aston Villa Defeat
Manchester City captain Bernardo Silva has opened up about the team’s defensive struggles following their shock defeat to Aston Villa on Sunday.
City, who were unbeaten in ten games before the clash, suffered a setback when Matty Cash scored a late goal to seal the win for Villa at Villa Park. The result exposed City’s vulnerabilities at the back — something Silva didn’t shy away from addressing.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Silva admitted that while the Citizens played well with the ball, their defensive shape was far from solid.
“It’s still a long way to go. I don’t want to draw too many conclusions,” Silva said. “We would love to be at the top but we’re not. It’s way too early to draw conclusions.
I would say we played quite well with the ball. Our offensive concepts are really good. Even if we didn’t score, we had chances. We made them defend deep and they struggled in some moments. On the other side of the game, we were really bad defensively.”
The Portuguese midfielder went on to acknowledge Villa’s quality, describing them as a “Champions League team” with “a lot of quality players.” However, he emphasized the need for City to look inward and fix their defensive lapses if they want to stay in contention for the Premier League title.
Despite the loss, Silva remains optimistic about the season ahead, noting that it’s still early days and City have plenty of time to bounce back.
