After two years away from international rugby, Louis Rees-Zammit has been recalled to the Wales national team for their Autumn Tests, marking his much-anticipated return to the sport after his brief foray into American football.
The 24-year-old speedster, who joined Bristol Bears earlier this season, wasted no time making an impression — scoring a try on his Gallagher Premiership debut. His return adds pace and flair to a Welsh side entering a new era under head coach Steve Tandy.
Tandy’s first assignment as head coach is no small task. Wales will face Argentina, Japan, New Zealand, and South Africa in November, a formidable lineup that will test the resilience of his newly assembled 39-man squad.
Wales’ squad features a blend of veterans and emerging talents, led by British & Irish Lions flanker Jac Morgan, who returns as captain. Among the headline recalls are Saracens prop Rhys Carre and Cardiff fly-half Callum Sheedy, both eager to reclaim their international spots.
Interestingly, Rhys Carre’s inclusion was only possible after the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) confirmed his eligibility despite playing outside Wales — a decision approved by the Professional Rugby Board.
Meanwhile, five uncapped players have earned their first call-ups:
James Fender (Ospreys)
Morgan Morse (Ospreys)
Brodie Coghlan (Dragons)
Danny Southworth (Cardiff)
Louie Hennessey (Bath)
The squad, boasting 744 total caps and an average age of 26, reflects Tandy’s vision to blend experience with youth and inject fresh energy into the team.
Rees-Zammit’s comeback story is one of determination and self-belief. After leaving rugby in 2023 to pursue a dream of playing in the NFL, he signed contracts with both the Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars, but never featured in a competitive game.
Now back in familiar territory, he’s eager to make an impact for Wales once again — faster, stronger, and more driven than ever.
Wales’ new era begins on Sunday, November 9, when they take on Argentina at the Principality Stadium. The following weeks will see high-profile clashes against Japan, New Zealand, and South Africa — all broadcast live on BBC Radio Wales and Radio Cymru.
Coach Steve Tandy, formerly Scotland’s defence coach, is confident about the future:
“It’s been really exciting going through the whole process and realising how many good players we’ve got. There’s a really good mix of young guys and experience — it’s a new time, and I can’t wait to get the boys into camp.”
Wales’ autumn lineup symbolizes renewal and ambition, and with Rees-Zammit back in red, fans can expect explosive rugby and a fresh chapter for Welsh rugby under Tandy.
