Jurgen Klopp Opens Up On The Painful Loss Of Diogo Jota
Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has opened up about how difficult it has been to come to terms with the tragic death of forward Diogo Jota, who passed away alongside his brother in a fatal car crash in Spain last July.
Jota was reportedly on his way back to the United Kingdom ahead of Liverpool’s preseason preparations when the accident occurred — a loss that shook the football world and left teammates and fans heartbroken.
Speaking on Steven Bartlett’s Diary of a CEO podcast, Klopp revealed how Jota’s passing has left a lasting impact on him and everyone connected to the club.
“You cannot be prepared to deal with things like that. Today we talk about the transfer window that would have looked completely different,” Klopp said.
“You have to sort the things that you never expected you would have had to think about. Everybody wanted this boy to spend the next 10 years at Liverpool — all-around player, can play all positions, football smart.”
Jota, known for his versatility, work rate, and calm finishing, was one of Liverpool’s most reliable forwards. Klopp described him as “the kind of player every manager dreams of — adaptable, humble, and fiercely competitive.”
Reflecting on how his absence has affected the team, Klopp added:
“I cannot imagine the dressing room right now without him being there. That’s for the boys as well. Nobody at Liverpool will ever use it as an excuse…. He was so close with James Milner, very close with Kostas Tsimikas — that’s moon and mars. Dealing with it on a personal level… Impossible.”
The former Reds boss also noted that the tragedy has given him a new perspective on life, emphasizing the human side of football beyond trophies and transfers.
“Football gives you joy, but it can also bring you to your knees. Losing Diogo… there are no words,” Klopp concluded.
Jota’s death remains one of football’s most devastating losses in recent years, with tributes continuing to pour in from fans, clubs, and former teammates around the world.
As Klopp and Liverpool continue to process the heartbreak, one thing remains clear — Diogo Jota’s legacy of passion, professionalism, and humility will never be forgotten.
