Liverpool Legend Jamie Carragher Urges Reds To Drop Mohamed Salah After Shock Defeat To Manchester United

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has sparked debate among fans after boldly suggesting that Mohamed Salah should be dropped from Liverpool’s starting lineup. This comes after the Reds’ 2-1 defeat to Manchester United, a result that left supporters questioning the Egyptian star’s form and influence.

Salah, who has been a symbol of consistency and excellence at Anfield since 2017, failed to score once again, extending his longest goal drought in the Premier League to seven games without a non-penalty goal.

Carragher Calls For Salah To Be Benched

Speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast, Carragher stated:

“I think we’re at that stage now where Mo Salah shouldn’t be a guaranteed starter every week. I do think this is a real conundrum for the manager going forward.”

He further explained that Salah should remain an automatic starter at Anfield, where Liverpool dominate possession, but sit out some away fixtures to allow for tactical flexibility.

“He should always start at Anfield because Liverpool will be on top… But in away games, helping your full-back, I don’t think Salah should be starting every game right now, certainly away from home, with the form he’s in,” Carragher added.

Salah’s Drought Raises Tough Questions

At 33, Salah remains one of Liverpool’s most decorated players with 248 goals in 412 appearances, four Golden Boots, and countless match-winning moments. However, his recent dip in form has raised concerns about whether age and fatigue are beginning to take their toll.

While manager Arne Slot has kept faith in his talisman after extending his contract earlier this year, critics argue that Liverpool’s attack must evolve—especially after heavy summer spending.

Liverpool’s Future: Building Around Wirtz & Isak

Liverpool’s £240 million investment in Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak signals a shift toward the next generation of attacking stars. Carragher believes these two should now be the focal point of Liverpool’s rebuild, saying:

“It has to be Isak and Wirtz because they’ve spent the money on them and their age profile compared to Salah.”

With both players already impressing in their debut season, the question is no longer whether Salah can deliver—but whether Liverpool should start planning for life beyond him.

Conclusion

Mohamed Salah’s name has long been synonymous with Liverpool’s golden era—but even legends face moments of reckoning. With Carragher’s bold comments reigniting debate and competition for attacking spots heating up, the coming weeks could define not just Salah’s form, but Liverpool’s direction in a new era.
