British number three Katie Boulter’s tough spell on the WTA Tour continued after she was beaten in straight sets by Germany’s Eva Lys in the opening round of the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.
Boulter, ranked world number 50, fell 6-2, 6-1 in just one hour and 14 minutes as her opponent dominated from start to finish. The 23-year-old Lys, currently ranked 44th, broke Boulter’s serve five times and capitalized on the Briton’s inconsistent first serve, where she managed to win only 50% of points.
The result extends Boulter’s disappointing run — she hasn’t progressed beyond the second round of any tournament since the Nottingham Open in June. The defeat also follows her straight-sets loss to Sorana Cirstea in the second round of the Japan Open just five days earlier.
The 29-year-old has endured a frustrating second half of the year, unable to replicate the solid performances that briefly lifted her into the world’s top 30 earlier in the season.
With Emma Raducanu withdrawing from the Pan Pacific Open due to illness, Boulter was the only British representative in the main draw — but her exit leaves no British women remaining in the tournament.
As the WTA season draws to a close, Boulter faces a crucial period to reset and rediscover her form ahead of the 2026 campaign. Her focus will likely turn to improving consistency on serve and finding more confidence in baseline exchanges — key factors if she hopes to return to the top 30 and compete deeper in major tournaments next year.
