Flamingos Coach Bankole Olowookere Rues Missed Chances After 4-1 Defeat To Canada
Nigeria’s U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, kicked off their 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign on a disappointing note, suffering a 4-1 defeat to Canada on Sunday night.
The match began with an early shocker as Gabriela Istocki put Canada ahead in the second minute. The Flamingos, however, showed fighting spirit when Queen Joseph fired in an equaliser in the 30th minute — giving fans hope of a comeback.
But the second half told a different story. Canada’s Julia Amireh scored twice, while Melisa Kekic added another to seal a dominant win for the North Americans.
Speaking after the match, head coach Bankole Olowookere expressed disappointment over his team’s missed opportunities and defensive errors.
“This was a huge game. Sometimes mistakes happen. We had our chances in the first half. We didn’t take advantage of them, and we paid dearly for it,” Olowookere said via FIFA.com.
“I think it’s a lesson we’ll keep learning. We’ll go back, watch how we played, and see how to bounce back stronger.”
Despite the loss, the Flamingos’ performance showed glimpses of promise — especially in attack, where they created several scoring opportunities but failed to convert.
As the girls prepare to face France in their next group game on Wednesday in Rabat, fans and supporters across Nigeria are hopeful for a strong comeback performance.
