Super Eagles vice-captain William Troost-Ekong has expressed strong confidence that Nigeria will qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following their emphatic 4-0 victory over Benin Republic on Tuesday.
The win, which came in their final Group C fixture, saw Victor Osimhen shine with a hat-trick while Frank Onyeka added the fourth goal to seal a memorable night in Uyo.
Although the victory wasn’t enough to earn an automatic qualification spot, it secured Nigeria a place in the CAF playoffs, keeping their World Cup dream alive.
Bafana Bafana of South Africa finished top of the group after beating Rwanda 3-0 in their final match, leaving Nigeria to fight through the playoffs for a ticket to the 2026 showpiece in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Troost-Ekong praised his teammates’ resilience and called for continued support from fans.
“Getting here wasn’t easy,” he said. “We’ll take it one game at a time, and I believe we’re going to make it. I’m proud to be part of this team, part of this family. The boys are playing just like they do for their clubs. We need to keep supporting them.”
The Super Eagles defender also reflected on the team’s challenges during the qualification journey, describing the playoff spot as a hard-earned result.
“It’s easy to celebrate now, but it’s been a tough journey. Many said it was impossible, but we kept believing,” he continued.
“We need to love the players for who they are and their efforts. We know when to work and when to relax. We have an exceptional group and a big job ahead in Morocco.”
As the playoffs approach, Troost-Ekong’s optimism captures the spirit of a determined Super Eagles side — hungry to prove themselves on the biggest stage once again.
