Manchester United legend Roy Keane has once again set the football world buzzing after naming Diego Simeone as his dream candidate to replace current boss Ruben Amorim. With Amorim struggling to make his mark at Old Trafford, Keane believes the fiery Argentine could bring back the steel, chaos, and winning mentality that the Red Devils have been missing.
Since arriving at United, Ruben Amorim has won just 29% of his Premier League games. Although INEOS chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe insists the Portuguese tactician will be given time, fans are growing restless. The recent wins over Chelsea and Sunderland offered temporary relief, but the bigger picture suggests United are still far from their glory days.
Keane, speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, summed up his frustration with a trademark mix of humour and bluntness:
“I’d still say give the man a chance, absolutely. Another week.”
But his real bombshell came shortly after.
Keane has long admired Diego Simeone, and once again he made his feelings clear:
“I’ve said it for years, I’d like Atletico Madrid’s Simeone to go in there. He would just create havoc, but good havoc. He’d rock up to that place. I’d just like to see his personality, his track record.”
Simeone’s record speaks for itself:
2 La Liga titles
2 Champions League finals
More than a decade of transforming Atletico into one of Europe’s most feared teams
Known for his fiery touchline antics, iron discipline, and relentless fighting spirit, Simeone seems to embody the very qualities Keane says United have lost since the Sir Alex Ferguson era.
Despite the noise, Sir Jim Ratcliffe is standing firm behind Amorim. Speaking on The Business podcast, he dismissed any chance of a quick managerial switch:
“Ruben needs to demonstrate he is a great coach over three years. You can’t run Manchester United on knee-jerk reactions.”
For now, Simeone remains a fantasy for Keane and many fans, while Amorim fights to prove he belongs at Old Trafford.
If United ever made the move, Simeone would bring:
Discipline and defensive organisation
A fierce mentality in big games
The “us against the world” culture that once made United feared
As Keane put it, Simeone might just deliver the “good havoc” Old Trafford desperately craves.
