Countdown To 27th NUGA Games: University Of Jos Gears Up To Host Thousands Of Athletes
The countdown has officially begun to the 27th Nigerian University Games (NUGA), which will be hosted by the University of Jos (UNIJOS) from November 6 to 16, 2025.
With just one month to go, preparations are in full swing as UNIJOS gets ready to welcome 7,457 accredited athletes and officials from universities across Nigeria. Over the course of ten thrilling days, participants will compete in multiple sporting disciplines, showcasing talent, unity, and the very best of university sports.
The NUGA Games remain the premier platform for university athletes, serving as a breeding ground for national sporting heroes and fostering camaraderie among students. Preliminary competitions have already been held across the 15 NUGA zones nationwide, determining the universities that will qualify for the Games proper.
Professor Ishaya Tanko, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, expressed confidence in the institution’s readiness:
“The University of Jos is fully ready to host the nation. This event is not just about competition; it is an opportunity to promote sports excellence, strengthen unity among our young people, and showcase the hospitality and capacity of our institution and the Plateau community.”
This will be the first time in history that UNIJOS hosts the NUGA Games, and the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) has assured that facilities, logistics, and security measures are being finalized to meet international standards.
NUGA officials also confirmed that volunteer registration, media accreditation, and promotional activities are ongoing to ensure seamless coordination ahead of the Games.

“The NUGA Games continue to serve as a platform for identifying and nurturing sporting talent within Nigerian universities. We are confident that UNIJOS 2025 will set a new benchmark in organization, participation, and spirit.”
Beyond the competition, the event is expected to boost tourism, culture, and local enterprise in Jos, with thousands of visitors set to experience the warmth and vibrancy of the Plateau community.
As the countdown ticks closer, excitement is building for what promises to be a landmark edition of the Nigerian University Games.
