From Street Vendor to Argentina Call-Up: Lautaro Rivero’s Remarkable Journey

In football, some stories transcend the sport itself — and the tale of Lautaro Rivero is one of them. The 21-year-old River Plate defender, once a street vendor selling cookies in Buenos Aires, has received his first call-up to Argentina’s senior squad under Lionel Scaloni, putting him one step closer to realizing his dream of playing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

A Humble Beginning in Moreno

Born and raised in Moreno, a working-class suburb on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, Rivero’s path to footballing stardom was far from easy. Growing up in a family of six children, he often helped his parents by selling alfajores, traditional South American cookies, on the streets.

Football, however, offered an escape. Playing at local club Los Halcones, just a few blocks from his home, Rivero began honing his craft as a centre-back. Despite the challenges, he never lost sight of his dream.

The Breakthrough at River Plate

Rivero’s determination paid off when he was spotted and recruited by River Plate’s youth academy, one of the most prestigious in Argentina. His rise through the ranks was steady, marked by grit, discipline, and a relentless desire to succeed.

By 2022, Rivero was already catching the eye of coaches and fans alike. Speaking in an interview that year, he emphasized the role of family in his journey:

“We are very humble and hardworking. My biggest wish is to see my family doing well. Thanks to them, I’m here, fighting every day.”

The Call From Scaloni

This month, Rivero’s hard work and persistence were rewarded. Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni included the 21-year-old in his latest squad, marking the defender’s first taste of senior international football. For Rivero, it is more than just a call-up — it is proof that dreams can indeed come true.

With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, Rivero now has the chance to cement himself as part of Argentina’s next generation, learning alongside legends like Lionel Messi and established stars such as Cristian Romero and Lisandro Martínez.

A Story That Inspires

Rivero’s journey from selling cookies on street corners to representing Argentina is a powerful reminder of football’s ability to transform lives. His story is not just about talent, but about resilience, humility, and the support of family.

As Argentina continues its preparations for the road to 2026, one of the most inspiring narratives to watch will undoubtedly be that of Lautaro Rivero — the ex-street vendor who fought his way into the world’s biggest stage.
