Ex-Barcelona Wonderkid Ansu Fati Makes Ligue 1 History with Monaco Brace
Ansu Fati, once touted as Lionel Messi’s heir at Barcelona, is enjoying a sensational rebirth at AS Monaco, where he has smashed a decades-old Ligue 1 record. The 21-year-old Spaniard became the fastest player to reach five goals in the French top-flight, achieving the feat in just 126 minutes of action.
Fati Rescues Monaco Against Nice
In Monaco’s thrilling 2-2 draw with Nice, Fati turned saviour. After Sofiane Diop put Nice 2-0 up with a quick brace, the Spanish forward coolly converted two penalties to drag his side back into the game. His composure under pressure earned him the Player of the Match award and confirmed his growing influence at the club.
Record-Breaking Start in Ligue 1
Fati’s rapid-fire scoring run broke a record that had stood since 1948. He eclipsed Johan Audel’s 137-minute feat at Valenciennes in 2007–08 and Emmanuel Rivière’s 174-minute record for Monaco in 2013–14. He now sits joint-top of the Ligue 1 scoring charts with Strasbourg’s Joaquin Panichelli.
From Injury Setbacks to Revival in Monaco
After a career blighted by injuries at Barcelona, including long-term knee and hamstring issues, Fati endured a stop-start loan at Brighton in 2023–24. But his Monaco spell has been transformative. With six goals and two assists in just five appearances, he already looks sharper, freer, and hungrier than ever.
For a player once tipped as Barcelona’s next great star, Fati’s renaissance in France could mark the long-awaited beginning of his peak years. With Monaco holding an option to buy, his stay in the Principality may soon become permanent.
