Manchester United’s season has gone from bad to worse—and it’s only September. The Red Devils find themselves in the middle of a crisis, with players said to be “astonished” by their disastrous start to the 2025-26 campaign. United have lost three of their first six Premier League games and currently sit 14th in the table, just one place higher than where they finished last season.
After last year’s nightmare, United dipped heavily into the transfer market over the summer. Big names like Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko were brought in to bolster the attack. Hopes were high, especially after a positive pre-season tour in the US, but those hopes have quickly crumbled.
The low point so far? A shocking Carabao Cup exit at the hands of fourth-tier side Grimsby Town. Losing 3-1 to Brentford in their latest league match has only made the pressure on Ruben Amorim more intense.
According to The Sun, United’s players themselves are stunned at how quickly the optimism has drained. Despite a summer of hard work and promise, the reality of Amorim’s system has left the dressing room confused and disjointed. Since taking charge in November 2024, Amorim has picked up just 34 points from 33 Premier League games—a record that is now fueling questions about whether he is the right man for the job.
Former Chelsea and England midfielder Joe Cole believes Gareth Southgate could be the “perfect” man to steady the ship at Old Trafford. Citing his ability to build a culture and handle pressure at the highest level, Cole argued that Southgate may understand United’s demands better than Amorim currently does.
With the season already slipping away, United desperately need results before the pressure cooker explodes further. Fans are restless, the players are bewildered, and the manager’s job is on the line. One thing is certain—every fixture from here on feels like a must-win.
