Tragic Death Of Billy Vigar Sparks Calls For FA Action On Dangerous Pitch Surroundings

The football community has been left reeling following the tragic death of Billy Vigar, a former Arsenal youngster, who suffered a significant brain injury during a recent match for Chichester City. Vigar passed away on Thursday after being placed in an induced coma and undergoing surgery earlier in the week.

Fatal Collision During Match

The injury occurred during a match at Wingate and Finchley on Saturday, where Vigar reportedly collided with a concrete wall while trying to keep the ball in play. The incident has raised urgent concerns over the safety of pitch surroundings, particularly in the lower tiers of English football.

Calls For Immediate FA Action

Dorking Wanderers owner and manager Mark White has highlighted the dangers players face on pitches across the football pyramid, calling for immediate action.

“All clubs need @FA to instruct an immediate enquiry into pitch surrounds. Many are dangerous and players always have to be cautious given the proximity from the pitch. But some simply do not move and are lethal. These need removing immediately.”

Tributes Pour In

Chichester City released a heartfelt statement, saying:

“After sustaining a significant brain injury last Saturday, Billy Vigar was put in an induced coma. Although an operation was performed to aid recovery, the injury proved too much, and he passed away on Thursday. Rest in peace Billy. Forever in the hearts of all at Chichester City Football Club.”

Former club Arsenal also expressed their devastation:

“Everyone at Arsenal is devastated by the shocking news that former academy graduate Billy Vigar has passed away. All our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this time. Rest in peace, Billy.”

The Football Association acknowledged Vigar’s passing on social media, sending condolences to his family, friends, and Chichester City.

Vigar’s death has reignited debates about player safety, especially regarding the proximity of hard surfaces and walls around pitches. Clubs and the FA are now under pressure to assess and improve conditions to prevent such tragedies in the future.
