Manchester United’s dressing room has seen plenty of change in recent months, and for academy star Kobbie Mainoo, that’s meant finding a new best mate. Once inseparable from Alejandro Garnacho, the 19-year-old midfielder has now formed a close friendship with summer signing Leny Yoro following Garnacho’s shock departure from Old Trafford.
Mainoo’s bond with Garnacho was one of the most visible in United’s young core, with the pair often spotted together on and off the pitch. But with Garnacho moving away, Mainoo risked being left isolated in the squad.
Instead, the England international has struck up what insiders describe as a “surprisingly close friendship” with French defender Yoro, ensuring he still feels at home in United’s evolving squad.
Mainoo had started learning Spanish two years ago to communicate better with Garnacho and Amad Diallo. While Garnacho has continued his bromance with Amad away from United, those efforts haven’t gone to waste.
Fortunately for Mainoo, there’s no language barrier with Yoro, who speaks fluent English — making it easy for the pair to connect quickly both on and off the pitch.
While Mainoo has made 76 senior appearances for United and already collected 10 England caps, this season has been difficult. Under new head coach Ruben Amorim, the midfielder has been pushed to the fringes, with his only start coming in a Carabao Cup disaster against Grimsby Town, where United suffered an embarrassing defeat to the League Two side.
The lack of opportunities has already sparked speculation that Mainoo could consider leaving Old Trafford to secure regular football, especially with the 2026 FIFA World Cup looming.
For now, however, the young star can take comfort in his new friendship — a bond that may help him weather a frustrating campaign.
