‘A Slap In The Face’ – Bas Dost Opens Up On Maddening Ordeal As Heart Inflammation Forces Retirement Following Cardiac Arrest
Former Netherlands international and Bundesliga striker Bas Dost has announced his retirement from professional football at 36, following a terrifying on-pitch cardiac arrest in October 2023. The powerful forward described his recovery from heart inflammation as “maddening” and revealed a “dramatic” setback that left him with no choice but to hang up his boots.
Heartbreak On The Pitch
The incident occurred during an Eredivisie clash between NEC and AZ, when Dost collapsed and required immediate resuscitation. He was later diagnosed with myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle, which put his football career on hold.
“It was maddening. The prognosis was that the inflammation would disappear after six months. I thought I’d be able to play again next season,” Dost said. “But in March, a scan was done – with dramatic results. The inflammation was almost back in full force. That was a slap in the face for me.”
A Prolific Career Across Europe
Dost enjoyed a decorated career across Europe, making a name for himself in Germany with VfL Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt, where he scored 48 goals in 121 Bundesliga appearances. Before his move to Germany, Dost was Eredivisie top scorer with Heerenveen and also had a successful stint at Sporting CP in Portugal.
For his national side, Netherlands, Dost earned 18 caps and netted one goal, leaving a lasting impression as a formidable and reliable centre-forward.
The End Of A Remarkable Journey
While his career has been cut short due to health reasons, Dost’s determination and talent on the pitch will be remembered by fans across Europe. His retirement highlights the serious risks professional athletes face with cardiac conditions and the importance of proper medical care in football.
Bas Dost leaves the game as a prolific striker, but his story serves as both an inspiration and a cautionary tale for future generations of footballers.
