When Manchester City fans at Huddersfield sang the names of Yaya and Kolo Touré, they could not have predicted another set of brothers would soon follow in their footsteps.
With City leading 2-0 in their Carabao Cup tie, Pep Guardiola turned to his bench and introduced Reigan and Jaden Heskey — the teenage sons of former England striker Emile Heskey.
The debuts came with added symbolism. Watching from the dugout was Kolo Touré, now part of Guardiola’s backroom staff, 10 years after Emile last featured in an EFL Cup fixture himself.
“Today, six players from the academy made the starting XI,” Guardiola said.
“Two more came on, the Heskey brothers. I think their father and mother will be so proud of their kids. That’s really cool.”
For Emile Heskey, it was a full-circle moment as his sons followed him onto a professional stage.
Jaden Heskey (19): A hard-working, box-to-box midfielder, Jaden has captained City’s academy sides and scored in the 2024 FA Youth Cup final against Leeds. He replaced fellow graduate Nico O’Reilly for the final 14 minutes.
Reigan Heskey (17): A quick and clinical winger described by the club as “tricky” in the final third. He came on for Savinho shortly after his brother.
Both are regulars in City’s academy setup, with their father previously describing them as possessing “similar attributes” to his own playing style.
“The young one is very quick. The older one is a bit of a beast like I was,” Emile told the Mail earlier this year.
For City, the night was about more than progression in the Carabao Cup. It was also a showcase of the next generation, with eight academy players featuring across the 90 minutes.
But for the Heskey family, it was unforgettable — a reminder that footballing legacies can live on through the next generation.
