Ruben Amorim has been warned that he could have just months left as Manchester United manager, with Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner tipped as a strong candidate to replace him.
The Portuguese tactician is under mounting scrutiny after overseeing United’s worst start to a season since 1992-93. Saturday’s 2-1 win over Chelsea at Old Trafford briefly eased the pressure, but questions about his long-term future remain.
Former United goalkeeper Ben Foster believes Amorim’s dismissal is a matter of “when, not if,” arguing that the Red Devils still lack cohesion.
Speaking on his Fozcast podcast, Foster said:
“I think he [Amorim] has got a couple months left, probably. He’ll go through a bad little run of two or three or four games in a row where he loses, and eventually they’ll go, ‘Right, we’ve had enough now, it’s obviously not working.’
Somebody who would be good for Man United is Glasner. He’s only got nine months left on his contract at Palace. My only worry is that United are sick and tired of playing three at the back. If he comes in and says, ‘Right, I’m playing three at the back,’ they might not like it. But to lose five key players and still improve the way Palace have — that’s impressive. They’re fifth in the league.”
Glasner, who guided Palace to an excellent start despite losing key stars in the summer, has emerged as a serious name on the shortlist of potential replacements. Other managers reportedly in the frame include Andoni Iraola, Gareth Southgate, Marco Silva, and Mauricio Pochettino.
Adding to the speculation, Amorim was recently linked with a return to Portugal to take charge of Benfica, though those rumours ended when Jose Mourinho was unveiled as their new head coach last Friday.
Amorim addressed Mourinho’s appointment after United’s victory over Chelsea, telling DAZN Portugal:
“He’s the best Portuguese manager, and that won’t change. He opened all the doors for us. I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for Jose Mourinho.”
On his own future, the under-fire manager said:
“It is what it is and we’ll see what happens. But I’m focused only on Manchester, and that will be my only club.”
With United’s campaign still on shaky ground, all eyes will be on how Amorim navigates the coming weeks. Another poor run could see the club’s hierarchy forced into a decision — and Glasner waiting in the wings.
