It took longer than expected, but the young Polish defender is poised to join an intriguing mix of defenders in Rome.
Jan Ziolkowski of Legia celebrate a win during the UEFA…
With all the hoopla surrounding Roma’s it-might-be-dead-oh-no-wait-it’s-still-alive pursuit of wantaway Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho, another dormant transfer rumor just found new life: Roma is poised to sign Legia Warsaw defender Jan Ziółkowski on a permanent transfer.
Ziółkowski, 20, was heavily linked with the Giallorossi earlier this summer, with many sources claiming Roma were ready to pounce on the young Polish center-back for a paltry €6 million. And, well, that’s precisely what is happening, according to several sources, notably Gianluca Di Marzio.
Now, you may be asking: If the price didn’t change, why the delay? Well, word on the streets suggests that Legia Warsaw wanted to keep Ziółkowski through the second leg of the Europa Conference League qualifiers against Hibernian, set to kick off on Thursday evening. With a 2-1 lead after the first leg, let’s hope Warsaw can make quick work of their Scottish opponents and that Ziółkowski emerges unscathed.
All told, Roma will pay Legia Warsaw €6.6 million, while the deal reportedly includes a 10% kicker on any future sale.
Ziółkowski joins an intriguing center-back rotation, joining the Juan-esque smoothness of Evan Ndicka, the Matterazzi clone Gianluca Mancini, the captain of Team Salt and Pepper Temples, Mario Hermoso, and Daneile Ghilardi, who may challenge Marco Borriello and Luca Toni’s title of the handsomest man to ever play for the Giallorossi.
