Barcelona To Receive €6.5m For Playing Villarreal In USA
Barcelona and Villarreal are currently in discussions with La Liga to feature in the first-ever league game to be played outside the country – an objective Javier Tebas has had for several years now.
As the new season rolls towards its commencement, the La Liga president is trying his best to ensure that the aforementioned clash takes place in Miami at the Hard Rock Stadium.
The idea is to take the league outside the country for a few games in the long run to improve the publicity, brand value and global image of the league.
A sizeable sum
As relayed by Santi Ovalle (h/t CarpetasFCB), the clubs will receive a sizeable economic package in exchange for agreeing to play the game in Miami. The payment will be a multi-million dollar amount that cannot be ignored.
Barcelona’s usual rate for a friendly game outside the country is around €5 million. Since this is an official game, however, they will receive close to €6.5 million should they play the game in Miami.
Tebas’ plans of moving La Liga games to the United States, despite it being just one match now, have not been received well by most of Spain, who are fiercely protective of their domestic league.
Some clubs from La Liga have also opposed the idea, with Real Madrid, in particular, raising their voice against the proposal.
On top of that, playing such a game in a new continent is a massive burden on players who must endure long travels and the fatigue associated with it in the already hectic timetable.
Given the Catalans’ economic struggles and the value of every penny in their coffers, such a massive amount is simply indismissible. Joan Laporta and Co., however, must consider all the pros and cons before giving the final green light.
